ok, a very knowledgable collector wrote me after seeing my listing on ebay.  turns out the gun is a lot older than my estimate!
    here's what he said:
... I could not tell enough about the details I needed to pin down the exact model and dates of it. I do know for a fact it was one of three Daisy bb Gun models and what the dates are of when they were made. (1) Daisy model H - made between 1912 to 1916 (2) Daisy model 11 - made between 1917 and 1918 (3) Daisy model 12 - made between 1918 and 1919. These three model of Daisy guns were the "only" Daisy models that came out with this kind and shape of cocking lever action. That alone proves it is one of these three models. These three models of Daisy BB guns "look" almost identical and are difficult to tell the difference between without seeing the model number stamped on top of the receiver. I thought, I can't tell for sure, that I saw some kind of stamping on the sides of the receiver on your gun. If you look close, you may be able to tell if anything was ever stamped on the receiver sides. If it does, it used to say "Daisy". If there is any kind of stamping marks on the receiver sides at all, your gun is the Daisy model H made between 1912 and 1916 because the other two models don't have any stamping at all on the receiver sides. Maybe this will help you to more closely identify and date your Daisy BB gun. It is a lot older than 1940s to 1950s and that is a fact. I hope this helps.

MORE INFO RECEIVED, GUN MODEL IDENTIFIED!
    from my helpful expert:
    >>On your gun, look on the receiver sides and see if you can barely see two perfect about 1/2" inch diameter circles about 2" apart horizontally, center to center, that would be stamped on both sides of the word daisy on your receiver. I have zoomed in on your gun's pictures plus used a magnifying glass over that and I'm "almost" sure I see them. If the stamped circles are there, your gun is a model H Daisy BB gun. The circles originally were little bullseye designs daisy stamped on these model H guns.<<
I DO SEE EVIDENCE OF THIS/THESE CIRCLE(S), SO THAT MEANS THE GUN IS
A MODEL H DAISY BB GUN
